History of the Vaults

The Chancery Lane Safe Deposit opened in 1876, renting strong rooms mainly to London's wealthy elite in order to safeguard their household silver, jewellery and personal documents.

Entrance to the building was gained by special arrangement and the strong rooms were guarded day and night, as indeed they still are today. In fact it remains the proud boast of the Safe Deposit that there has never been a robbery within its precincts.

The business remained the same for several years, but with many of the original clientele being replaced by silver dealers who required secure premises for their burgeoning stocks. This need was made more pressing by the outbreak of the Second World War.

As knowledge of the vaults began to spread, the Vaults became a "must" for visitors from overseas seeking quality silver at dealers' prices. The rapid expansion of this business led to many more dealers renting a strong room within the now well renowned Silver Vaults and it has been in its present format since 1953.
